If you haven’t heard this quote from the late Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thích Nhất Hạnh before, you’re welcome.
It’s one of my favourites (and surprisingly hard to put into practice).
In a world optimized for action. Where efficiency, speed, and growth are (in many circles) revered above all else. This is a fresh breath of different.
And even for one who claims to value calm. One who has a non-trivial amount of exposure to mindfulness. It often takes much lip-biting and sitting upon of hands.
From the burning urgency of the inbox to the “shoulds” and “musts” of social media peer-pressure. It can be tempting to spend your days (and therefore life) putting out fires.
But what if you didn’t, just for today?
What if you gave yourself permission to let that idea rest for a night and see how you feel about it in the morning?
What if you craft the post or email or website update – to get it out of your system – and then just leave it? Let it marinate?
Most of us possess an often-unhelpful bias for action, but sometimes, the best thing we can do for ourselves – and our businesses (and our families) – is … nothing.
Sitting here,
James
P.S. Hat tip to my good friend Chris Justin for first sharing this great quote with me.
