When you think of the word “amplifier,” does your mind immediately go to “loud”? To images of stadium rock and distorted mayhem?

Mine sure does.

So I was floored when Kader Blaine – my good friend, musical co-conspirator and the best man at my wedding – said this on our call this evening:

“An amplifier allows you to play quietly.”

Ugh. So true!

Amplification doesn’t have to be for making your shouts louder. It can be for making your whispers audible.

Kader had heard Julian Lage (one of the best current jazz guitarists) say this on a podcast, quoting Jim Hall (one of the best past jazz guitarists), and was likewise floored.

And now, maybe, you will be too 🙂

Floored,
James
