Do you ever feel like you have two different voices? Your speaking voice and your writing voice?

You’re not alone. (And if you have more than those two—again, not alone.)

I run into this problem all the time. People say things like, “I just want to say X,” and then proceed to send me a draft full of “implement” and “leverage.”

My solution is to write out loud.

I covered this in the first-ever One Creative Moment piece. But now I have a catchy phrase to go with the solution 🙂

“Writing out loud” means writing as if you were speaking. Using short sentences and simple language, with lots of space for people to process ideas.

How do you check?

Read every email, social post, and chunk of web content out loud before you hit publish. If it sounds weird saying it, change it until it doesn’t.

Out loud,
James
