If you’ve ever struggled to articulate your point, your idea, your thing-that-you-made-or-are-making, here’s something that might help.
(Because it is, after all, Tactical Tuesday 🙂
Start by writing it in a letter.
It doesn’t have to be a real letter – you don’t have to send it – but it helps if it’s to a real person. For me, it’s always my mum.
Imagine you’ve not talked to this person for a while. They don’t know a lot about your subject, but they’ve got the basics.
Now, write them a letter. Catch them up on what you’ve been doing.
You can even start with some off-topic personal background info if you like. But don’t skip anything they’ll need to know to understand what you’re trying to explain.
What’s the context that led to you deciding to make/do/think this? Who do you think it will help? Why? Why are you doing this? What do you hope will happen? Why is it important that it happens? And so on…
By the time you’re done, you’ll have a robust collection of words laying out your whole point/idea/thing in logical order.
With that in hand, you can copy and paste (or at least outline) an email, a landing page, a pitch deck, a script, a blog post, the real letter you need to write, what you want to say to your partner, your kids, your clients, the board, or the press.
The sky’s the limit. And all you had to do was write a letter.
Just write,
James
