I used to think that “finding” gratitude was something far too lofty and
involved for me.
I pictured long periods of time spent sitting alone in somber reflection.
I pictured tears (of gratitude) silently spilling down my cheeks.
I pictured the feeling of realizing I owed a great debt to the world and
those around me, and carrying that debt around like a heavy stone to
remind myself “just how grateful I should be.”
But it turns out that was all malarkey.
Gratitude is light, gratitude is easy, gratitude is free, and gratitude is freeing.
I finally figured this out when I started doing my version of the
5-Minute Journal, which I first heard about from Tim Ferriss.
(I say “my version” because I don’t actually own the journal; I simply
swiped the concept and the questions.)
The “3 things I’m grateful for” part takes about one minute (of three) at the
start of the day. And the “3 amazing things that happened today” part takes
about one minute (of two) at the end of the day.
Adding this to my routine is all I changed. And yet I notice that I’m now more
aware and appreciative of the things that bring me joy – all day, every day.
Thanks 5-Minute Journal. Thanks Tim Ferriss.
And thank you for reading,
James
