How’s that for a subject line? lol

Today’s Tactical Tuesday piece comes directly from Jonathan Stark.

When telling people what you do, how often do you start with “I’m a…”?

Almost every time? Me too. And fair enough.

It’s the default.

The problem is it’s also tacitly commoditizing us each time we say it. It subconsciously turns us into a replaceable unit.

If you’re an employee looking to stay that way, it’s probably fine.

But if you’re a business owner looking to find your edge, it won’t do.

Luckily, the solution is to figure out what would come next if you instead started with, “I’m the…”.

You can’t be “the web designer” without qualifying it further. (“Who helps NGOs look like big organizations.” “Who creates horizontally scrolling homepages.” And so on.)

It won’t come overnight. (If it does, I’ll be jealous.)

But it’s something worth thinking about regularly to see what fits.

P.S. This has been on my mind lately because I’ve had three calls this week with people who wanted my take on applying the SNAP credit system to their business or productizing their services.

And that’s all down to my being on Jonathan’s Ditching Hourly podcast a couple weeks ago – talking about just that.

Which has got me thinking. Is this something that could be my “the”? The productized services consultant for soloists and founder-led businesses? It sounds good. Stay tuned!
