‘Tis the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature is stirring…except me, prepping for Christmas dinner (for ten!) and trying to get as much done in advance as possible.
I had a panicky moment earlier in the day when I thought I might not know where I’d put the notes I’ve been accumulating over the years of doing this.
But then, Eureka! I remembered I’d put them in the big roasting pan 🙂
Can’t make Christmas dinner without the big roasting pan – and can’t (or really don’t want to) make Christmas dinner without my notes from previous years.
Or call them SOPs if you like (Standard Operating Procedures).
As important in the kitchen as in your business, SOPs are what let you leverage your past self’s brilliant planning and emotional labour.
Without them, you’re re-inventing the wheel every time (or the turkey).
And we all know how that first time goes.
If you’ve got a thing that you do, and you know you’re going to do it more than once, write it down!
Or screenshot it. Or record yourself doing it. Or make a voice memo.
Your future self will thank you, and so will anyone you hire in the future to do that work for you. And, even though they won’t see it, so will your future clients and customers (and dinner guests).
Long winter’s napping,
James
Even if they’re just handwritten scraps (some from when my Dad cooked Christmas dinner here), they’re still SOPs, and they’re still very valuable! |
