You know those moments when you get to the end of a routine and realize you have no memory of doing its component parts?

That’s good old autopilot 🙂

It has its uses, don’t get me wrong. It gets you where you need to go, but it’s a little off-putting when you stop to consider how.

Now imagine it played out at the level of a life, a career, or a business.

So many people throw themselves into “doing all the things.” But is it what they actually want? (As opposed to what they’re told they want.)

There’s a chance it will work out fine. Unremarkable, but fine.

Yet, if they end up being “different” in any way (an invisible majority, I expect), they crash and burn. They fall through the cracks.

Because they never learned how to think for themselves. They never thought to ask.

I’ve found it helps to look for the questions behind the question. Not only, “is this a good strategy, a good way to get X?” But, “is X even a thing I want to get?” And, if so, “why?”

That, and putting in a night’s sleep before making any big decisions.

Note to self: This applies to holiday spending, too.

Happy self-reflecting,
James
