Do you get overwhelmed in crowded places? Are you more distracted by loud sounds or bright lights than others seem to be?

If so, you might be a Highly Sensitive Person.

I think I’ve known for a while now – to some extent – that I am a highly sensitive person.

But it wasn’t until I read this articleand took the self-test linked to on this page that I realized I’m also, and actually, a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP).

And that that’s a thing.

HSPs make up around 15 to 20% of the population, equally distributed between men and women (though men are less likely to admit it).

And the remaining 80-85% kind of can’t even understand how much of a difference it makes.

It’s classified as a personality trait, not a disorder. The goal is to understand and anticipate it, to manage expectations; not to change it.

And I can see the ramifications for business owners (and parents). Struggling to find the ideal situation to say/do something. Being blown off-course by criticism. Becoming overwhelmed if the to-do list gets too big too soon.

If you know (and accept) this, it will be a lot easier to plan your offerings, strategy, and schedule in a way that will help you thrive.

Which will help your employees, clients, and family thrive too.

Sensitively,
James

P.S. I only had this – pretty big – breakthrough thanks to Nick Milo (the Obsidian champion). He talked about being an HSP in his article about the psychological and creative benefits of living in a house rather than an apartment.
