What do you listen to while you’re getting down to work? What puts you in the zone (and keeps you there)?
It’s not only a nice way to start this off; I’d like to know.
For me, I have a whole range of different things that work. From Shostakovich string quartets to Vulfpeck. From hard bop to Studio Ghibli soundtracks.
It depends on the day; it depends on the project.
But one thing I can’t listen to is anything with lyrics, which is a letdown because I’m more into music with singing. Bands like the pixies, the Velvet Underground, Blur, Beach House, and Lucius.
I love driving bass lines, rapturous harmonies, angular guitar leads, and intricate drums. And they rarely come without vocals.
Luckily for me, I “discovered” a band called La Luz this past year. They’re kind of a surf rock band (I’ve also heard them called doom wop, lol), and they do all of that (and do it very well).
For Record Store Day last year, they did me the inestimable favour of releasing an instrumental version of their most recent, self-titled album.
Now I can have my aural cake and eat it too!
I recommended it (when asked) in one of my slack groups, and people liked it. So now I’m sharing it with you, in case you too wish you could listen to rock but without the words while you’re working.
Rock on,
James
P.S. La Luz means ‘the light’ in Spanish…illumination…in the subject line…clever.
