What if you had a trusted marketing & messaging collaborator by your side?
Many founders and marketing leaders of established, successful small and midsize businesses like yours face a common roadblock: being so close to the business you can’t see how others perceive it. Or what growth opportunities you might be overlooking. Or how you could get more value out of your existing sales and marketing assets.
If you’re out of ideas for your existing market – or are expanding into a new one – you might want to work with a strategic marketing professional who thinks like you but can view your business from a completely different perspective.
What makes me different? Here are some of the biggest reasons clients choose to work with me.
Get a ‘sparring partner’ for your strategic thinking
I’m often brought in when the way forward on a project or initiative is unclear. If you’re looking for someone to help you bring clarity to your goals and how to accomplish them, then one of my Roadmapping Sessions might be just what you need.
A Roadmapping Session is an in-depth, 2-hour call designed to take a high-level look at your business, finding and prioritizing places where copy can help you reach your goals, and determining how to capture the customer data necessary to write copy that will really move the needle.
These sessions often serve as an appetizer for a larger project. They are particularly helpful if you aren’t sure exactly what you need, what you’re working with, or how much prep work it would take to get an effective copywriting project off the ground.
“The thing I liked most about working with James – apart from his amazing work on my cold to warm and warm to hot email sequences – were our regular strategy and brainstorming sessions. Together, we were able to work through many different hypotheses and strategies, making sure we were taking the best approach. It was like having a sparring partner for my business ideas, which really helped me move forward.”
Hear new ideas from a different perspective
It’s not by design, but when I’m working on a project I’m always working on that project. By that I mean, when I’m walking the trails near my house, cooking Saturday brunch, or jamming in my home studio, there’s always a bit of my brain churning over the problems and possibilities of what we’re working on.
Whether I weave some of those ideas into the copy I’m creating, or jot them down for our next regular meeting, I make sure not to let anything go to waste. It’s sometimes the littlest things that end up making the biggest impact.
Build trust with your customers and prospects
When I’m gathering Voice of Customer (VoC) data in a customer interview, my mission (besides capturing verbatim pains and desires, as well as unintentional ‘sticky’ copy) is to have your customers end the call feeling better than when we started.
With dozens of successful customer interviews under my belt, you can rest assured you’re putting your most valued supporters in good hands when you reach out to ask them for an interview.
“James’ upfront strategy work was extremely useful, going on to help with more than just the project for which we engaged him. James interviewed 10 of our customers, analysed the results for a messaging hierarchy, and highlighted key phrases used to describe their pains, desires, and successes. This helped us articulate the value of our product in terms that resonate with our customers and prospects.”
Gain a partner with a solid track record
I’ve worked with B2B and B2C businesses from the Tech, SaaS, Real Estate, Self-Improvement, Education, and eCommerce industries, on everything from strategy and planning, to emails and landing pages, to customer onboarding and retention.
Having seen what works – and what doesn’t – across so many different industries and business types, I’m able to connect seemingly unrelated dots, bringing fresh, creative ideas to the table that someone deeply niched in a single industry might not see.
I’m known for my ability to quickly understand new offerings and markets, digging deep into the needs, wants, pains, and desires driving your target audience.
If we’re working together, I want to partner with you to help you achieve big things and continue to improve and sustain your business. As a result, I typically develop long-term, repeat/recurring business relationships (often years-long!) rather than looking for simple, one-off projects (though I’m open to them too, if we’re a great fit).
“Working with James on separate copywriting and strategy projects over the past few years, we’ve become better at presenting our services in a way that helps potential clients understand the value we offer. In particular, a 15-email series James created to move people through the core of our program has surprised me with nearly 100% watching the linked videos they contain. (I was worried they wouldn’t get watched at all!)”
On a more personal note…
I take great pride in my roles as a husband (to Kayte, ~14 years), father (to Alice ~5 and James ~9), musician (guitar, bass, vocals, writing), gardener (Square Foot, urban), and cooking enthusiast (I cook and eat lunch with my family every single day, from 11:30 to 1).
One of my most formative experiences was living with Kayte in Nagoya, Japan from 2008-2011. When we decided to move back to Canada and start a family, we went the other way around, flying to Bangkok and traveling overland to the UK (where my parents live), spending six days on the Trans-Siberian Railway from Beijing to Moscow.
I started out freelance copywriting (web, email) in mid-2014, as one of the great Joanna Wiebe’s (Copy Hackers) first dozen or so students, after being laid-off from my first ever “permanent, full-time” job. Looking back, I couldn’t be more grateful about that (even though I was and am the family’s sole income source and we had a 1-yr-old son and a 4-month-old mortgage at the time).
It starts with a call
So, if you want to work with someone who will take the time to fully understand your customers, your business, and your market, let’s connect. We’ll start with a discovery call to talk in broad strokes about the work that lies ahead and go from there, if we both feel we’re a match.
“James spent a lot of time talking with me and putting in the work to understand my perspective, research my market and competitors, and focus in on areas where he thought I could stand out. I feel I got more than my money’s worth with his great attitude and willingness to be available for follow up questions.”
